Poll: Only 27% say America is heading in the right direction

written by Frank Williams

American_Flag_2According to a poll published yesterday by Rasmussen Reports, only 27% of likely voters say the United States is heading in the right direction, while 67% say the country is headed in the wrong direction.  Rasmussen’s polls have shown that a consistently low percentage of voters feel the country is headed in the right direction — the figure was below 20% prior to President Obama’s inauguration.

The poll also reveals an ongoing disconnect between what Rasmussen calls the “political class” and the rest of us:  65% of the political class say the country is heading in the right direction, while 82% of mainstream voters say it’s going in the wrong direction.

Conservative Energy on the Ground in Southeastern North Carolina

written by Frank Williams

During the month of March I attended county GOP conventions in nine southeastern North Carolina counties.  Everywhere I went, there were big crowds of enthusiastic conservatives ready to roll up their sleeves and work to take back our state and nation.  This was true even in rural counties long dominated by Democrats.

In addition to attending nine county conventions, the 7th District Republican Party has held three debates among the Republican candidates for Congress.  The first debate, held in Brunswick County, attracted over 200 people.  The second and third debates, which were both held in rural, Democrat-dominated counties (Duplin and Columbus), each attracted around 50 people — a far cry from the phone booths in which many local Republican organizations were once able to meet.

A Piece of Legislation Worth Supporting

written by Frank Williams

usconstitutionAccording to this commentary by Walter Williams, in each new session of Congress since 1995 Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz) has introduced the Enumerated Powers Act, a measure “To require Congress to specify the source of authority under the United States Constitution for the enactment of laws, and for other purposes.”  Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) has introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

This is a piece of legislation worth supporting.

However, according to the commentary, the highest number of co-sponsors it has ever had in the House of Representatives is 54 and it has never had co-sponsors in the Senate until this year, when 22 senators signed up.

Commentary by Walter Williams on Nancy Pelosi’s demonstrated Constitutional contempt

written by Frank Williams

This commentary by Walter Williams, which was published on GOPUSA last week, is a must-read:  Constitutional Contempt.

A few key excerpts:

  • At Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s Oct. 29th press conference, a CNS News reporter asked, “Madam Speaker, where specifically does the Constitution grant Congress the authority to enact an individual health insurance mandate?”
  • Speaker Pelosi responded, “Are you serious? Are you serious?”
  • The reporter said, “Yes, yes, I am.” Not responding further, Pelosi shook her head and took a question from another reporter.

We are privileged and blessed to live in the United States of America — the land of the free, because of the brave.  We are indebted to our forefathers, who fought and died to obtain and later defend our freedom – a legacy we should ponder as we celebrate this Veterans’ Day.

While not perfect, our nation is the greatest free society this world has ever seen.  As Americans, we enjoy unprecedented opportunity, freedom and prosperity.

We live in a nation where those who are willing to work hard and take a risk are allowed — indeed, encouraged — to reap the rewards of their hard work.

Column by Walter Williams: American Idea

written by Frank Williams

One of my friends just sent me a link to this column by Walter Williams; it is worth a read.

“Americans are harder workers, more philanthropic, individualistic, self-reliant, anti-government than people in most other countries. We’ve turned what was an 18th-century Third World nation into the freest and most prosperous nation in mankind’s entire history. Throughout our history, United States has been a magnet for immigrants around the world. What accounts for what some have called American exceptionalism?”   more…
