Rasmussen Poll: Burr Takes Bigger Lead

According to a poll released today by Rasmussen Reports, incumbent U.S. Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) has expanded his lead over two of his potential Democrat opponents.  According to the poll:

  • Burr leads Secretary of State Elaine Marshall 50% to 34%, with 12% undecided and 4% preferring some other candidate.  Last month, Burr led Marshall 47%-37%.
  • Burr leads former state Senator Cal Cunningham 51% to 29%, with 14% undecided and 6% preferring another candidate.   Last month he led Cunningham 50% to 34%.
  • Against both Democrats, Burr leads among voters not affiliated with either major party by 20 or more points.

Shuler still not running for Senate

Under the Dome reported today that Democrat Congressman Heath Shuler has once again said that he does not plan to challenge Republican U.S. Senator Richard Burr in 2010, despite much media speculation to the contrary.

According to Under the Dome, the Hendersonville Times News quoted Shuler as saying, “I am not running for Senate.  I am not running for Senate. I am not running for Senate. I have said that a thousand times, and I don’t know why they keep coming up (with the idea). Of course they keep coming up and running polls.”

Elaine Marshall considering US Senate run?

capitol-dome-compressed-file-2According to this post on Under the Dome, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall is considering a run for Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in 2010; the Democratic nominee would face Republican incumbent Richard Burr.

Other Democrats who appear to be considering Senate runs include:  U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre (7th District), former State Senator Cal Cunningham of Lexington and former Obama fundraiser Kenneth Lewis, a Durham attorney.  Congressman Heath Shuler (11th District) had previously ruled out a run, but may be reconsidering.  Former State Treasurer Richard Moore is also on the Democrats’ list of potential recruits.

U.S. Senate 2010 — Potential Democratic Candidates

capitol-dome-compressed-file-2Last week, Attorney General Roy Cooper announced that he would not challenge Republican U.S. Senator Richard Burr in 2010.

With Cooper’s announcement, speculation about who will seek the Democratic nomination is rampant.   Some of the possibilities include:

U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre, who represents the 7th District (southeastern North Carolina).

U.S. Congressman Heath Shuler, who represents the 11th District (western North Carolina); earlier this year Shuler said he would not run, but is reportedly receiving calls encouraging him to do so.

U.S. Congressman Bob Etheridge, who represents the 2nd District (east of the Triangle); according to an Under the Dome report, Etheridge does not seem particularly interested but is on the DSCC’s target list.

Senator Burr draws first opponent

Sen. Richard Burr

Under the Dome is reporting that Durham attorney Kenneth Lewis plans to seek the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Richard Burr in 2010.  According to Under the Dome, Lewis raised money for Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign as well as his 2004 U.S. Senate campaign in Illinois.

Attorney General Roy Cooper is also believed to be considering a run for Senate, and Congressman Mike McIntyre (D-NC7) did not rule out a bid when the question ws posed by a Wilmington TV station.
